Toshinari Asano is a Managing Director with Nardello & Co. in Tokyo, where he leads the firm’s Japan Practice. Toshi has been an investigator since 2003 and has significant experience conducting a wide variety of due diligence, complex investigative assignments involving fraud and corruption, asset searches and other litigation-support investigations for clients in Japan and overseas.
With a background in banking, Toshinari is particularly fluent in understanding the needs of investment banks, hedge funds, private equity firms and real estate investment firms as it relates to mitigating potential and existing investment risk, KYC programs, counter-party risk assessment and due diligence in relation to M&A transactions. In one such matter, he helped a client extricate itself from a problematic real estate investment in Japan after its partners were found to have organized crime links. Toshinari has also led a large cross-border asset search for a Japanese client embroiled in litigation proceedings overseas, and managed an internal investigation into allegations of corruption and employee embezzlement at a US company’s operations in Japan.
Prior to joining Nardello & Co., Toshinari was a senior investigator in Japan with two international investigations firms. He began his career in the financial services industry, working for a Japanese long-term credit bank and a major US investment bank. He has also held a senior management position at a Japanese-Israeli technology venture company. Toshinari holds a BA in Legal Studies from the Sophia University in Tokyo and is fluent in Japanese and English.
