Our People/Joseph F. Thompson

Managing Director Joseph F. Thompson brings to his work 24 years of experience as a federal narcotics agent who led multi-agency law enforcement operations in prominent international investigations of illicit drug trafficking, money laundering, and drug cartels.  Most recently, Joe served for three years as the Drug Enforcement Adminstration’s Country Attaché at the US Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya. Before that, he commanded the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force, based in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and served as a liaison agent in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. During his first decade with the DEA, he led seizures of multiple tons of heroin and cocaine, including an investigation that led to the indictment and conviction of high-level Taliban members for heroin distribution.  Before his federal service, Joe was an officer in the New York City Police Department, where he was assigned to the Manhattan South and Queens narcotics units as an undercover officer.

Representative Matters
  • As assistant country attaché, Joe orchestrated a ten-month undercover operation in the Dominican Republic that resulted in the seizure of one ton of cocaine and the arrest of British and Dutch citizens and led to the indictment and arrest of a designated super facilitator who laundered funds and supplied weapons to the target gang. The case was prosecuted in the Southern District of New York.
  • To combat a Mexican cartel responsible for smuggling over $90 million worth of cocaine into the United States, Joe spearheaded an initiative aimed at fostering cooperation between US authorities operating within the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and Mexican authorities, specifically those who collaborated with the DEA offices in Mexico. The objective of the investigation was to disrupt and dismantle the transnational criminal organization led by an individual who had been designated a Consolidated Priority Organization Target, or CPOT. Following the seizure of approximately $8 million in bulk currency and 850 pounds of cocaine from members of the organization, the CPOT and 24 individuals associated with the organization were indicted in the Southern District of New York. All 25 were arrested and convicted.
  • Joe led an investigation into a sophisticated heroin smuggling operation headed by an Afghani duo that manufactured heroin in Afghanistan and Pakistan and distributed significant amounts to wholesalers in the New York metropolitan area. The duo allocated half of their profits to the Taliban in return for safeguarding their opium fields. The investigation culminated in the indictment, arrest, and conviction of seven organization members in the Southern District of New York.
