John Fitzpatrick is a Managing Director and General Counsel for EMEA in the London office. An experienced international lawyer and emerging markets specialist, John has lived and worked throughout the EMEA region, including Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East. His experience advising both as an in-house counsel in multinationals and as outside counsel to a range of leading global corporations has given him a unique understanding of the compliance, regulatory, and diligence issues associated with doing business in the EMEA region and in particular emerging markets.
John has over 22 years of international legal, compliance and regulatory experience, providing counsel to a broad range of clients across a variety of sectors throughout EMEA and beyond. He has significant expertise in multi-jurisdictional transactions, litigation, and arbitration and has regularly advised major multinational corporations on significant regulatory and compliance issues, including civil and criminal matters.
John joined Nardello & Co. from the international law firm CMS Cameron McKenna, currently the sixth largest law firm in the UK and the sixth largest law firm in the world, where he represented multinational companies across EMEA with a focus on emerging markets. He has advised on a wide range of matters, including M&A, joint ventures, equity and debt finance transactions, multi-jurisdictional transactions, strategic compliance and regulatory matters, commercial contracts, employment matters, intellectual property, and dispute resolution (litigation and arbitration) in multiple sectors and industries.
His depth of experience gives him a unique perspective on advising clients on a range of compliance, regulatory, and diligence issues. During his 15 year-tenure at CMS—including at Hayhurst Robinson, a firm that merged with CMS, where he was a founding partner—John was instrumental in building and leading the firm’s Tier 1-ranked Technology Media Telecoms Sector Group, as well as the firm’s Istanbul office, where he was a founding and managing partner. He was also a leader in CMS’s Emerging Market Corporate, Commercial and Disputes Practice Groups and has been involved in matters and managing offices across emerging Europe and beyond. Prior to CMS, he was an in-house counsel for the US headquarters of a multinational technology company, Bull HN Information Systems, for the Paris global headquarters of Schlumberger, and was also an associate in the Boston office of Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault, LLP and the Paris office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP.
John holds a BA in international politics and psychology from McGill University and a Masters of European and Comparative Law from the University of Paris, Pantheon-Assas and its Institute of Comparative Law. He received his JD with honors from the University of Connecticut School of Law in addition to his LLM with distinction in international law from Georgetown University Law Center.
